There is some confusion surrounding the bewildering array of editions of Huysmans' works, particularly Against the Grain and Down There, that were published in America in the 1920s and 1930s. This is a guide to various editions from publishers such as Lieber & Lewis, A & C Boni, Illustrated Editions Co, Three Sirens Press, Modern Library, Black Archer Press and Hartsdale House, showing the distinguishing features of each.

Groves & Michaux and the Fortune Press published some of the earliest English translations of Huysmans’ major work. But the facts surrounding the editions produced by the two publishers are little known and often obscure, leading to misattributions and confusion about which edition is which.
